You Can Now Get A Karen Halloween Mask And There's Honestly Nothing Scarier

There have been some scary phenomenons in 2020, from climate change to the coronavirus pandemic, but perhaps the most terrifying has been the rise of the ‘Karen’.

Yep, it has had us truly shook.

In case you need a reminder, Karen is the new insult doing the rounds thanks to a string of Twitter memes – used to describe the sort of person who would complain to the manager, make a fuss unnecessarily and generally act entitled.

And now it’s become such a ‘thing’ that you can even buy a ‘Karen’ mask ahead of Halloween, with the creator, Jason Adcock, even likening Karens to the modern day boogeyman.

The 34-year-old from Los Angeles, California, US, drew on his past run-ins with the angry women when he worked in cosmetic retail as well as videos across news and social media in the past 12 months.

Admitting that rows he’d had with Karens had ‘affected’ him in the past, Jason moulded a Karen inspired face, complete with bulging red eyes and yellowing teeth.

Each mask takes around a week to complete, and Jason makes the original sculpture, followed by a plaster mould, then a rubber copy, before finally applying the paint, hair and lashes.

In a social media post, Jason said: “2020 is the year of the Karen! Scare all your friends with your big hair and narrow mind.”

Interest in the masks has been so high that despite them costing £145 ($185) they have sold out through Jason’s online Etsy shop, Kamoras Costumes.

But here’s to hoping he’ll knock some more up soon, so we can snag one.

To top off the 2020 vibe, Jason has also created a ‘Karen-19′ mask, which he dubs ‘the infected version of our original mask’.

Just when we thought she couldn’t get any scarier!

The realistic masks have all been moulded and hand painted by Jason and have vision slits just above the eyes as well as extra vents in the mouth, nose and ears.

While the Karen masks are clearly meant in jest, some haven’t taken too kindly to them.

Jason said: “I do get a lot of angry and just plain ignorant letters from all kinds of people who hate the mask.”

One message Jason received said: “So how is this funny? My name is Karen and I’ve been Karen all my life. I look nothing like this and it’s offensive! I am a very nice person and a mom of four kids.

“The use of the name Karen is repulsive and offensive in this way! It was ignorable for awhile [sic] but it’s getting really annoying.

“Do you actually know anyone named Karen? Is this like that person? It’s people like you that keep this harassment going!”

While another added: “Really? Disgusted that you are attempting to make money from the name Karen. I can’t believe how horrible these are.

“At least change the name. The Karens I know are nothing like this.”

But the artist simply responded: “You have to be smart to understand humour and if you can’t take a step back and laugh you’re not my customer base.

“I have had an overwhelming amount of orders from all over. Luckily I have an amazing partner and great friends helping me with it all.”

We need this mask for Halloween.
